FRIENDS OF YSGOL Y LLAN, WHITFORD
Who are the Friends of Ysgol y Llan?
Ysgol Y Llan is supported by the Friends of Ysgol Y Llan – which is another name for the PTA (Parents & Teachers Association). All parents of children within the school automatically become ‘Friends’.
Friends of Ysgol y Llan exists to raise much needed funds for the school. These funds allow the school to provide extra resources for the benefit of all pupils that wouldn’t be possible without our help.
Some examples of this include covering the cost of transport on some school trips, purchasing educational resources (for example, we funded the purchase of 16 iPads and the Purple Mash platform recently), and covering the cost of the Children’s Christmas Party.
We are a voluntary organisation and a registered charity, and are made up of parents from different year groups.
We run fun events for the children and parents to enjoy and also show our presence in the local community.
How often we meet
The Friends Committee meets every few weeks in order to share ideas and plan fundraising events throughout the year. Everyone is welcome at our meetings.
We are a friendly group who would welcome support and new ideas from all parents, relatives and friends. Please turn up if you can – we are always delighted to see new faces. The more members we have, the lighter the workload!
Why become involved with the Friends
Becoming involved with Friends is a great way to get to know other parents, relatives and teachers and become more involved in your child’s school.
It is really satisfying when you see children and parents enjoying one of our events, and all the more so when you see the valuable funds raised benefitting the school.
What you can do to support us
We are always looking for people with some time to spare, and love to hear new ideas for fundraising events. If you think you know of a way to make an event more successful or just want to see what we’re about, come along to one of our meetings.
Everyone is welcome – we’re a friendly bunch, so please turn up and share any suggestions you might have!
You don’t have to be on the Committee to help us. Some parents help by giving their time to help organise an event, whereas others support us by baking a cake or just turning up on the day. We appreciate everyone’s efforts – however big or small.
We always need volunteers at every event – whether that’s manning a stall or giving out tea and cake. If you think you can help, please contact us and put your name down on our helpers list.
Raising Money online
We can all raise some extra money for school through our normal shopping.
Ysgol y Llan is signed up to TheGivingMachine (www.thegivingmachine.co.uk).
The Giving Machine works by generating commissions from over 1500 retailers when you shop online, including Amazon, John Lewis, eBay, Sainsbury’s and Next. Simply sign up and link to your chosen online store through the Giving Machine, and we will receive a percentage of what you spend in commission.
It costs you nothing, but generates extra money for Ysgol y Llan. If we all sign up, the money would soon add up.
Please have a look and join up.

Friends Committee
Maria Hughes – Chair
As Chair of the Friends Committee, Maria is responsible for running the meetings (in-line with our constitution), and for making sure that everyone’s ideas and views are considered.
Maria is mum to Madison in Year 4 and Owain in Year 2. She has been attending meetings of the Friends since Madison was in Playgroup, and is passionate about playing her part in raising much needed funds for our school.
Maria brings enthusiasm, ideas and a can-do approach to the Committee. She is good at ‘making things happen’, and likes to arrange events that both make money AND give the children an enjoyable experience.
Maria is also ‘Chief Chip Fryer’ at discos as she holds a Safe Food Handling certificate. She works 4 days a week and runs Beavers in Carmel outside of school. She also bakes a lot - you’ve probably eaten one of her cakes at an event!
Sophie Owen – Vice Chair
We all know Sophie for being the School Secretary here at Ysgol y Llan. She is also the Vice Chair of the Friends Committee, and as such provides an invaluable link between the teaching staff and the Friends.
Sophie has five children who have all attended the school. Thomas, her youngest, is currently in Year 6. Sophie has always been involved in the Friends in one guise or another, whether on the committee or helping out as a year representative.
Kate Thomas – Treasurer
Kate is the Treasurer of the Friends Committee and keeps a tight hold on the purse strings. She keeps track of every penny, and likes to know that all money donated from events is put to good use and is of benefit to the children.
Kate is mum to twins Morgan and Lowri who are in Year 4. She works 4 days a week.
Kate loves being creative and will sit for hours doing craftwork. She puts a lot of effort into creating our invitations and flyers, and in ‘dressing’ our events so that they beautifully reflect the theme or season.
Rachel Goddard-Jones – Secretary
Rachel is our Minutes Queen. As Secretary, Rachel records everything that is discussed and agreed. We may only be a small committee but there are rules to be followed, and Rachel makes sure we adhere to them.
Rachel is always on the lookout for new ideas and events to raise much needed funds. She also has the unenviable job of trying to secure raffle prizes from local companies for our Christmas and Summer Fairs. Thankfully, she has perseverance in droves!
Rachel is mum to Charlotte in Year 3 and Harriet in Nursery. Rachel is just one parent who has seen the impact of the funds raised by Friends. When Charlotte started at Ysgol y Llan there were no iPads in the school, whereas Harriet will benefit from the 16 iPads that were recently secured thanks to monies raised.
